Deep in the Hole- Fantasy Baseball Week 17

By Charlie Wright on July 31, 2014

This is my weekly fantasy baseball column where I discuss the rising and falling stocks of certain players. Hopefully this information can help with your lineup decisions, and maybe give you some ideas when looking for a boost from the waiver wire. But, of course, do not sit your studs just for these guys, or drop a guy just because he appears on the list. These are just suggestions, albeit supported ones.

Heating Up

Adam Eaton, Chicago White Sox (OF) – Eaton has been hindered by injuries this year, dealing with a broken finger and multiple leg issues. When healthy, though, he has been a solid contributor atop the White Sox lineup. Eaton has 16 hits in 10 games since the All-Star Break, pushing his batting average to .285 on the season. Eaton doesn’t hit for much power, with only one home run, but he has 10 steals and 48 runs scored. He isn’t an exciting player, but can be a solid second or third outfielder for your squad.

Josh Rutledge, Colorado Rockies (2B, SS) – Rutledge has filled in admirably at shortstop while Troy Tulowitzki is on the shelf. He had four multi-hit games last week, and chipped in seven RBIs. Rutledge is especially valuable because of his eligibility at both middle infield positions, two of the weaker spots in Fantasy. Tulowitzki should not be out too long, so if Rutledge can keep hitting, he will assume the everyday job at second base once Tulowitzki returns.

Cooling Off

Nick Markakis, Baltimore Orioles (OF) – At this point in his career, Markakis is a contact hitter who does well getting on base. He has a modest seven home runs, but only four steals, disappointing for a lead-off hitter. Markakis is a serviceable outfielder, but his lack of premier power or speed makes his production entirely dependent on base hits. Markakis has just three hits in his last 25 at-bats, so he’s best left on the bench for now.

Miguel Montero, Arizona Diamondbacks (C) – Montero has been one of the highest scoring catchers this season, but his numbers have slipped in July. He has yet to homer this month, after hitting six in June. Montero has also struck out 17 times in 62 at-bats in July, against just six walks. Montero is in the midst of a nice resurgence after a rough 2013 season, but if you have a decent replacement, he’s best left on the bench until he gets back on track.

Minor League Chatter

After throwing 6.1 shutout innings last week, there are rumors Noah Sydergaard may be called up by the New York Mets. With Bartolo Colon on the trading block, the Mets’ top pitching prospect could be with the big club by August.

Nugget of the Week- Chase Headley began Tuesday, July 22 with San Diego in Chicago. He ended it with New York in New York, getting a walk-off hit in the 14th inning.
