How To Host Your First College Party In Your Apartment

By Jessi Stickel on October 18, 2015

Whether you’re celebrating your birthday or the fact midterms are over, having college parties can be so much fun. However, being the host of a party at your apartment can sometimes be intimidating.

You want to satisfy all your guests and make sure they are having the time of their lives, but you also do not want to get a noise complaint or destroy your apartment.

Here are some fun suggestions to make sure your first college party in your apartment is a blast!

Food:

Food is not necessarily an essential at a party, but it is nice to have for your guests to enjoy. You can just put out simple foods like:

1. Chips & Salsa/Dip

2. Cracker & Cheese Plate

3. Homemade Cookies or Brownies

Drinks:

Drinks, on the other hand, are a definite must at any party. You can have the normal drinks including non and alcoholic drinks, such as various sodas, punch, and alcohol like vodka and beer.

You can also try having the three following drinks at your college party as well.

1. Party Punch

This party punch is great for large crowds and is quite delicious. It includes fruit punch, ginger ale and orange juice; you can also add vodka if desired. This would be perfect to make for your first party — try making one with alcohol and one without for those who don’t drink. You can find the proportions of ingredients here.

2. Vodka Gummy Bears

Fill a container  with gummy bears and poor vodka to cover the gummy bears halfway. You have to let them soak for at least 24 hours. Over time, the gummy bears soak up all the vodka and become almost like little jello shots. These are a lot of fun to eat if you are not too big on drinking a lot. You can also try this with gummy worms.

3. Twisted Strawberry Lemonade

This refreshing drink contains lemon juice, sugar, strawberries, water and vodka (optional). It is very easy to make, and something that everyone can enjoy at your party. You can also make one non-alcoholic to accommodate underage guests and ones who do not drink. Find the full instructions here.

Make sure you label “alcoholic” on the drinks you make that contain alcohol; you don’t want your guest accidentally drinking if they cannot drink (like designated drivers) or simply do not drink.

If you do not supply the alcohol for you guest, make sure they know it’s BYOB (bring your own beer).

Entertainment:

Music

For any party, music is a must — it keeps the party fun and alive. It is best to play music off of apps like Pandora or Spotify, since these have minimum or no commercials or interruptions. If you choose to play your own playlist like on iTunes, make sure the songs are upbeat and diverse, so basically everyone will enjoy the music.

Games

1. Shot Roulette

Make a circle of different shots (some non alcoholic) and put an empty bottle in the middle, spin the bottle and drink whatever shot you land on. This is such a simple game, but such a blast to play.

2. Beer Pong

3. Quarters

4. Charades or Celebrity

Celebrity is similar to charades but you only write down celebrity names and get to say hints like what movies they were in for your team to guess the celebrity. It’s definitely a fun twist to the game.

5. Minute To Win It

You can create all types of tasks and obstacles to do against a friend within a minute and have a blast doing them.

Themes:

Having a theme for your party is always a good idea. It makes everything more fun and is a great ice breaker for your friends to meet new people. Here are some fun themes to have at your first party (besides a Robert De Niro theme, of course).

1. Meme Theme

2. Costume

3. Classic Toga

4. ABC (Anything But Clothes)

5. Luau/Hawaii

Safety Tips:

1. Be careful who you invite and who you let into your apartment.

Make sure you do not have any sketchy people at your party; the last thing you want is the cops showing up for drugs or worse in YOUR apartment.

2. Do not be involved with underage drinking.

Don’t invite underage friends to your party if you know they are going to drink. You do not want to be responsible for someone underage and under the influence. If you do have underage people at your party not drinking it’s also important for your friends to know not to pressure them or anyone to drink and do something they are not into.

3. Keep the capacity and music to a minimum.

Try to keep your party low-key in order to keep the guests at a minimum and avoid getting noise complaints or having your party get too out of control.
